Facelift

FACELIFT

Over the years, the skin of the face and neck loosens. Fine wrinkles on the forehead start to deepen even more. Sagging on the edges of the jaw and jowl start to appear under the chin and longitudinal bands become visible on the neck. The main factors that affect the aging of the face are genetic characteristics, personal habits, exposure to gravity and to sun. With the increased life expectancy and aged population, facial rejuvenation is on increasing demand.

Face rejuvenation, widely known as face lift or just lifting in English, medically known as rhytidectomy, gives the face a fresh, youthful appearance while retaining a natural expression and increases the person’s self-esteem.

Indications;

  • changes in the distribution of subcutaneous adipose tissue, subsequent sagging of the soft tissues of the face
  • formation of deep nasolabial folds (between cheeks and nose)
  • flattening out of the facial contours
  • excess skin and wrinkles
  • changes in the distribution of subcutaneous fat

 Duration of the procedure: from 2 to 6 hours depending on the preoperative findings

Type of anaesthesia: local anaesthetic plus a mild sedative, or general anaesthetic

Outpatient treatment with medical supervision during the first night

Operation

The facelift incision is hidden at the edge of the cartilage at the front of the ears, runs around the earlobes, behind the back of the ears and into the hair at the back of the scalp. After tightening of the SMAS, a thin layer of fibrous connective tissue directly underneath the facial skin, excess skin is removed. The skin is slightly stretched to avoid pull on the sutures. The incisions are hidden in natural lines and closed with thin and elegant stitches. These techniques warrant better healing process and almost invisible scars. It is not necessary to shave or to shorten the hair during surgery. When the procedure is completed, a bandage is gently applied.

Additional interventions such as liposuction to the neck or face, blepharoplasty and lip enhancement may be combined with facelift. Excess fat of the face and neck is removed by suction and areas of the face that have lost their fullness are augmented with autologous fat. This produces a perfect balance of skin-tightening, SMAS-lifting and correction of the maldistribution of subcutaneous fat due to aging. The patient’s own fat acts not only as a filler but as bioactive tissue, that improves the blood flow and the skin quality.
